The Outside Report

Editorial Standards

Editorial Policy

The rules we hold ourselves to so that our recommendations are worth trusting with your money.

Independence

The Outside Report is editorially independent of every brand and retailer we cover. We do not sell placement, we do not accept payment to include or rank a product, and no brand reviews or approves our content before it publishes. Affiliate commissions (see our affiliate disclosure) support the site but never influence our rankings or verdicts. If a product we'd earn a commission on is the wrong choice, we say so.

How we handle manufacturer samples

We may accept product samples for testing. Accepting a sample never guarantees a review, a positive verdict, or a ranking. When a review is based on a sample provided by the manufacturer, we disclose it. Samples are evaluated against the same criteria as gear we buy ourselves, and the cons go in the review regardless of where the unit came from.

Sourcing standards

  • Every factual claim — a speed, a weight, a price context, a "fastest in class" — is cited to a primary source, normally the manufacturer's product page or a reputable, named independent test.
  • Each review and guide ends with a Sources section listing the URLs we relied on.
  • Where a figure cannot be verified, we write that plainly rather than estimate. We would rather publish less than publish something we can't stand behind.

No fabrication

We never invent specifications, prices, ratings, awards, credentials, or customer reviews. The Outside Report displays no customer testimonials it did not receive, and no product ratings it did not derive from its own honest evaluation. Structured data (schema) on our pages reflects our own review scores only — we do not publish aggregate ratings we don't have.

Experience labeling

As described on our How We Testpage, every review is labeled as either field-tested or research-based. We never imply hands-on experience we haven't had. When a research-based review becomes field-tested, we update it and revise its "last updated" date.

Corrections

We fix errors promptly and openly. If you find a mistake, email us at contact@theoutsidereport.com or use the contact page. Substantive corrections are reflected in the page's "last updated" date.

Update cadence

Buying guides and reviews are re-verified at least every six months and immediately when a product line changes. Live price data, where shown, is refreshed automatically so it stays current. Seasonal content is refreshed ahead of each season.
