Common questions

Is The Outside Report independent, or are you paid by the brands?

We are editorially independent. We sell nothing and hold no inventory. The site is supported by affiliate commissions, which never influence our rankings or verdicts. When the best pick for you is a product we earn nothing on, that is still the pick we give you.

How does The Outside Report make money?

Through affiliate links. When you buy through a link on our site, we may earn a commission from the retailer at no extra cost to you. We participate in the Amazon Associates program and CJ Affiliate partner programs (including Kings Camo, Ravin Crossbows and CenterPoint Archery). See our affiliate disclosure for details.

Do you actually test the gear you review?

Every review is labeled as either field-tested (we or a named contributor personally used it) or research-based (evaluated from published specs, verified owner feedback and reputable independent testing, but not yet personally field-tested). We never imply hands-on experience we haven't had, and we upgrade research-based reviews as we get gear in the field.

What is the effective hunting range of a modern crossbow?

Most hunters keep ethical shots on big game inside 40 yards, even though many modern crossbows are accurate far beyond that at the range. Your effective range is whatever distance you can consistently group tightly under field conditions after sighting in — not the maximum the marketing claims. Practice at distance to know your real limit.

What crossbow speed (FPS) do I actually need for hunting?

For whitetail-sized game, anything from roughly 350 FPS up delivers plenty of kinetic energy at ethical ranges; faster bows flatten trajectory and shrink aiming errors but add cost and noise. Above about 400 FPS you are buying forgiveness and reach more than raw killing power. Match arrow weight and broadhead to the bow, and prioritize accuracy over top-end speed.

Is Kings Camo worth it compared to Sitka, First Lite or KUIU?

Kings Camo positions itself as the value alternative to the premium Western brands. You give up some of the refinement and the very lightest high-end materials, but you get a complete, capable layering system for meaningfully less money. For many hunters — especially those building a first serious system — that trade is well worth it. See our Kings XKG review and the head-to-head comparison.

What camo pattern is best for whitetail versus elk versus turkey?

Terrain matters more than the specific pattern name. Broken, darker patterns suit Eastern timber and whitetail treestands; lighter, open-country patterns suit Western elk terrain; and for turkey, full concealment (including face and hands) against spring green-up matters most because turkeys have exceptional eyesight. In every case, controlling movement beats any pattern.

Fixed or mechanical broadheads for a crossbow?

Both work. Fixed-blade heads are simpler and extremely reliable but demand good broadhead-tuned accuracy; mechanical (expandable) heads fly closer to field points and cut wide, but rely on the blades deploying and cost some penetration. On fast crossbows, choose a broadhead rated for high speed. We cover the trade-offs in detail in our broadhead guide.

When is the best time of day to hunt deer?

Deer are crepuscular — most active around dawn and dusk. The first and last hours of light are prime, and daytime movement climbs during the rut. Weather (a cold front, dropping barometric pressure) can trigger movement at other times too. See our 'when do deer move' guide for the full picture.

Do you write fake or paid reviews?

Never. We do not invent specifications, ratings, awards or customer testimonials, and we do not accept payment to include or rank a product. Accepting a manufacturer sample never guarantees a review or a positive verdict, and we disclose it when it happens. Our full standards are in our editorial policy.

Are your prices current?

Any live price we show is pulled from a retailer's official data feed and stamped with an 'as of' date; the price shown at checkout on the retailer's site is the one that applies. We never hand-type or scrape prices. Where we can't verify a current price, we show a 'check price' link instead of a number.

How can I suggest gear or report an error?

Use the contact page or email us directly. We read every message, we especially want to hear about factual errors, and we aim to reply within two business days.
