How to Read a Crossbow Scope: What Every Line Means
The stacked lines are yardage holdovers, the circles are a rangefinder, and the ring on the eyepiece is what makes them true. Here is how to read the whole reticle.
On a crossbow scope, the top crosshair is your 20-yard zero and every line below it is a pre-computed holdover for another 10 yards. The circles or stadia around them form a crude rangefinder. The numbered ring on the eyepiece sets the whole thing to your bow’s speed — and if it is wrong, every line except the top one is wrong with it.
That is the whole system in three sentences. The rest of this guide explains each part, because knowing why the lines work is what lets you troubleshoot them when they do not.

If your scope has dots rather than lines, or a lattice of circles rather than a simple stack, the principle is identical: vertical position equals distance, and the spacing is only true at the right speed setting.
The vertical stack: yardage holdovers
A crossbow arrow is heavy and comparatively slow, so it drops sharply. At 20 yards an arrow has barely started to fall; at 50 it has fallen a lot; at 80 the drop is dramatic. A rifle scope handles this by making you dial elevation. A crossbow scope handles it by drawing the answers into the glass.
The manufacturer computes the arc for a representative arrow at a representative velocity and etches aiming points at the resulting vertical positions. You put the right line on the animal and shoot. There is nothing to adjust in the field, which is exactly the point — you do not have time to dial a turret when a deer steps out.
Two consequences follow, and both are worth internalizing:
- The spacing is not even in real terms.The gap between the 20 and 30 lines covers less drop than the gap between the 40 and 50 lines, because drop accelerates. That is why misjudging range costs you more at distance — the reasoning behind our effective range guide.
- Only the top crosshair is adjustable.The turrets move the whole reticle together. If your 20-yard zero is perfect and your 40-yard line is off, turrets will not fix it — that is a speed-setting problem.
The circles: a built-in rangefinder
Many crossbow reticles include circles, or horizontal stadia of decreasing width, alongside the holdover lines. These are a rangefinding aid based on a simple principle: a deer’s chest is roughly a known height, so the apparent size of the animal tells you the distance.
Bracket the deer’s body between the marks. Whichever circle or stadia pair it just fills corresponds to a range. On a scope with a variable speed dial, this only works at a specific magnification setting — usually the highest — because changing magnification changes apparent size.
The horizontal marks: wind and lead
Short horizontal tick marks either side of each holdover line are wind holds. They are less useful on a crossbow than on a rifle, because at crossbow ranges wind drift is modest and the far larger error source is the animal moving.
Treat them as a reminder rather than a tool. If conditions are windy enough that you are thinking about a wind hold at 40 yards, the more useful decision is usually to let the shot go and wait.
The speed dial: the part everyone gets wrong
This is where most crossbow accuracy complaints originate. The numbered ring on the eyepiece — typically marked in 10-FPS increments across a band such as 300 to 460 — changes the magnification very slightly. Because the holdover lines are etched at fixed positions in the glass, changing magnification changes their apparent spacing, which is how one scope serves bows of different speeds.
Two rules follow.
- Set it to your bow’s measured speed, not the box speed.Published speeds come from the lightest arrow a bow is rated for, with a fresh string, measured close to the rail. Once the dial is set, tape it or note the setting. Bumping it in a truck bed is an easy way to lose every holdover past 20 yards without noticing.
How to verify every line on paper
Never trust a printed holdover you have not shot. The verification sequence is short:
- Zero the top crosshair at 20 yards. Three-arrow groups off a solid rest, adjust windage and elevation until centered. The full sequence is in our sight-in guide.
- Shoot the 30-yard line at 30 yards. Three arrows. It should print centered. If it prints low, your bow is slower than the dial setting; if high, faster.
- Adjust the speed dial, not the turrets. Move the dial a few FPS in the indicated direction and re-shoot. Then re-confirm the 20-yard zero, because a dial change is a magnification change.
- Repeat at 40 and 50. When 20, 30 and 40 all print centered with the same dial setting, the system is calibrated.

When the lines do not agree with reality

Notice the pattern: a problem that scales with distance is a speed-setting problem, and a problem that is constant at all distances is a zero or hardware problem. Diagnosing which one you have saves a great many wasted arrows.
Illumination, and when to leave it off
Most crossbow reticles illuminate in red and green at several brightness levels. Green shows up better against brown timber; red is better against snow and open sky. The important discipline is brightness: a reticle set too bright at first light blooms and hides the very thing you are aiming at.
Set it to the lowest level at which you can see the aiming point clearly against the target, and leave it there. In full daylight, turn it off entirely — the black etched reticle is easier to shoot precisely than a glowing one.

Should I use the illuminated reticle all the time?
No. In full daylight, turn it off - a black etched reticle is easier to aim precisely with. At first and last light, use the lowest brightness setting at which you can clearly see the aiming point. A reticle set too bright blooms and obscures the target.
